Workers in Australia historically used the name Hoplostethus intermedius for the Australian and New Zealand species, but workers in New Zealand treated the species as a junior synonym of Hoplostethus mediterraneus (see Gomon 2008 and Roberts & Gomon 2015). Roberts & Gomon (2016, NZ Fishes book) noted 'Hoplostethus intermedius, type locality Challenger Plateau, NZ, is a junior subjective synonym of H. mediterraneus Cuvier, 1829, type locality off Nice, Mediterranean, because these species are genetically and morphologically indistinguishable'.
