According to:Council of Heads of Australasian Herbaria (2010), Australian Plant Census
Published in:Scopoli, J.A. [G.A.] (1771), Flora Carniolica Edn. 2, 1 [110]

A very variable taxon, divided into five intergrading subspecies by G.Nordborg, Opera Bot. 16: 98-118 (1967), based on receptacle morphology. There is little or no correlation between receptacle morphology and other characters and intermediates are frequent (e.g. see G.Nordborg, Fl. Iranica, 66: 155 (1969); J.Cullen, Fl. Turkey, 4: 78 (1972); S.M.H.Jafri, Fl. Libya 31: 25 (1977); C.Navarro & F.Munoz Garmendia, Fl. iberica 6: 385 (1998)). Australian material has generally been referred to subsp. muricata and subsp. magnolii (latter in Vic only), but in light of the difficulty in reliably distinguishing infraspecific taxa even within the native range of the species, a broad approach is adopted here. There is also considerable confusion regarding the correct nomenclature for many of the infraspecific taxa, including those recorded from Australia.
