Some authors (e.g. A.D.Chapman, Austral. Pl. Name Index 754 (1991)) treat Caelebogyne ilicifolia J.Sm. as an illegitimate name, on the basis that “Sapium aquifolium J.Sm.” is cited in synonymy. However, while Smith validly published the generic name Caelebogyne in Proc. Linn. Soc. London 1: 41 (1839), the species name Sapium aquifolium is not validly published, as it is not accepted by the author (R.K.Brummitt, pers. comm. (2008)).
