Originally named by Scheele for the Italian botanist Paolo Boccone (1633–1704), the widely-used past spelling of the substantive epithet, "bocconi" or "bocconii" is to be corrected to "bocconei" in accordance with ICBN Art. 60.1, 60.11 and Ex. 11, Regnum Veg. vol.131 (2000). See L.G.Adams et al., Austral. Syst. Bot. 21: 263 (2008) for a detailed discussion of the orthography of this epithet.
