R.O.Makinson, Fl. Australia 17A: 335 (2000) treated G. oxystigma [var.] heterophylla as illegitimate, presumably on the grounds that it was to be considered the type variety and should have been called [var.] oxystigma. There is no evidence for this. Meissner gave all three infraspecific taxa equal treatment, and the Code requires that he be deemed to have created the autonym [var.] oxystigma simultaneously. Makinson subsequently lectotypified both the species and var. heterophylla on the same specimen, making them nomenclatural synonyms, but var. heterophylla was legitimate when described. Makinson (2000) discussed three informal forms, following Olde & Marriott (1995): a 'typical (type) form', a 'broad-leaved form' and a 'southern form'.
