  1. Data resource: Visual detections of Snubfin Dolphins (Orcaella heinsohni) in the Kimberley Region, Western Australia (2004-2020)

Sightings of Snubfin Dolphins (Orcaella heinsohni) were collated from a variety of published and unpublished sources...

  2. Data resource: Identifications of marine organisms from towed photo cameras, Kimberleys, Western Australia (1983-1997)

As part of the project North West Shelf Demersal Marine Resources Study (1982-1992) of the North West Shelf, Western Australia, this dataset is identifications at family level of taxa in images from towed cameras from ten voyages from the three vessels Pride of Eden, Southern Surveyor and the Soela. 3. Data resource: Records of vagrant phocid seals (family Phocidae) and fur seals (family Otariidae) in South Australia (1913-2012)

Two fur seal species breed on the southern coast of Australia: the Australian fur seal (Arctocephalus pusillus doriferus) and the New Zealand fur seal (A. forsteri). Two other species are vagrants: the subantarctic fur seal (A. tropicalis) and the Antarctic fur seal (A. gazella). We document records of vagrant fur seals in South Australia from 1982 to 2012...

  4. Data resource: Species assemblages, biomass and regional habitat characterisation across the offshore Kimberley region, Australia (2015)

Tow video and epibenthic sled collections were matched to a wide set of environmental data in the Kimberley region and subsequently identified as nine habitat/species assemblages that provided broad spatial characterisation of the region. Project details at https://wamsi.org.au/project/benthic-biodiversity/ and data for WAMSI 1.1.1.5 from https://data.pawsey.org.au/download/WA Node Ocean Data Network/WAMSI2/KMRP/1.1/1.1.1/Taxanomic Samples/Abundance by group (Camden Sound).csv

  5. Data resource: WAMSI Node 3.2.2b - Diversity, abundance and distribution of intertidal invertebrate species in the Ningaloo Marine Park - Quadrats, Australia (2010)

A quantitative pilot study of the composition of the benthic community of macro-invertebrates on intertidal rocky platforms was undertaken at Ningaloo, Western Australia from 2007 to 2010. This dataset is of the quadrat data from 20 sites. Data and metadata from https://catalogue.data.wa.gov.au/dataset/wamsi-node-3-2-2b-diversity-abundance-and-distribution-of-intertidal-invertebrate-species-i_c65f

  6. Data resource: The second confirmed record and a significant range extension for the White Ribbon Eel (Pseudechidna brummeri) in Australia (2020)

The white ribbon eel, Pseudechidna brummeri (Bleeker 1858) is a long, slender moray (family Muraenidae), inhabiting sheltered coastal reefs and seagrass beds of the tropical Indo-West Central Pacific region. Like many morays, it is widely distributed from the Western Indian Ocean, eastwards to the Society Islands, and northwards to southern Japan (Smith et. al. 2019). In Australia it was first recorded from two specimens collected at Murray Island (a.k.a Mer Island, ca...

  7. Data resource: Foraging behaviour in the Short-Tailed Shearwater (Puffinus tenuirostris) using GPS, Bass Strait, Australia (2012)

The study was conducted at Gabo Island Lighthouse Reserve (3733S, 14954E) and Griffith Island, Port Fairy (3822S, 14213E), two colonies located at both extremities of Bass Strait in south-eastern Australia. Breeding populations are estimated at more than 6,000 pairs at Gabo Island and 15,000 pairs at Griffith Island. Data were collected during the early chick-rearing period in February 2012.Fourteen trips were recorded using GPS and accelerometers to measure bird behaviour (e.g...

  8. Data resource: Catch composition and measurement records from trawling, RV Investigator voyage IN2017_V05, North West Shelf, Australia (2017)

Survey sampling occurred aboard the RV Investigator between 12 October and 6 November 2017 between 30 and 125 km offshore between Port Hedland and the Montebello Islands on the Pilbara section of the North West Shelf, Western Australia, in water depths of 25 m to 100 m. Approximately 373 fish taxa from 89 families were identified....

  9. Data resource: Southern Surveyor Voyage SS 03/2005 Box Core Infauna Samples, Gulf of Carpentaria, Australia (2005)

The dataset comprises catch records of invertebrates and fish from epibenthic sled deployments completed on research voyage SS 03/2005. The survey design was a natural experiment (i.e. control-impact, but not before-after) to test the long-term, broadscale effects of prawn fishing on non-target species and habitats. Deployments were stratified by fishing intensity (three strata) and day/night...

  10. Data resource: Northern Pelagic Shark Tagging Data 1983-1985 (releases), 1983-1997 (recaptures), tropical waters of Australia

Between February 1983 and May 1985, some 10 500 sharks of 23 species were fin-tagged off northern Australia. Tagging concentrated on the commercially important Carcharhinus tilstoni and C. sorrah. Most recaptures were made in 1984 and 1985, but returns continued until May 1997. In all 579 tags (5.5%) were recovered. Tag shedding was estimated to be low (0.025 year1 for C. tilstoni) and tagging mortality was significantly lower for sharks caught by handline than by gillnet...
