    The Murray–Darling Basin Authority’s waterbird survey is an annual aerial survey of waterbird populations and recruitment at 38 important wetland and river sites in the Murray–Darling Basin. The University of New South Wales is contracted to conduct the survey on the Murray-Darling Basin Authority’s behalf over 2014–2018. The University of New South Wales runs the survey through October and November each year.

    The Phytoplankton Monitoring Program (PMP) was established in 1978 as a key part of the water quality monitoring program for the Murray-Darling Basin, and is funded jointly by the Basin governments. The program currently monitors 12 sites along the Murray and its tributaries.

    The Murray–Darling Basin Authority works with Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia to monitor fish populations in 23 valleys in the Murray–Darling Basin on an annual basis. A standardised sampling protocol and randomised site selection is used to monitor species richness, size and condition of fish to report against high-level targets in the Murray–Darling Basin Plan. This dataset extends the fish component of the Sustainable Rivers Audit dataset (2004–2013).
