Brief description: Branched dermal 'tentacles' on margins of head; broad dark brown bands across head and upper body; no distinctive white rings.
Description : Margins of head with several branched dermal 'tentacles'. Several broad diffuse dark brown bands with corrugated edges across the head and upper body; scattered irregular pale spots covering the upper body, but no distinctive white rings.
Biology : Matures at 80 cm and gives birth to 2-16 pups in spring after a 10-11 month gestation period. Feeds mainly on fishes and cephalopods.
Habitat: Coastal to offshore rocky or coral reefs, often among thick stands of brown macroalgae.
Maximum size (cm): 110
Diet: Carnivore
Dangerous: Usually harmless, but will bite and hang on tenaciously if provoked.
Colours: Brown
Distribution: Port Douglas, Qld to Sydney, NSW.
